U.S. Congressman Jack Bergman of Michigan’s 1st District visited GLSC’s Hammond Bay Biological Station (HBBS; Millersburg, Michigan) and Cheboygan Vessel Base (CVB; Cheboygan, Michigan) on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. The HBBS tour was hosted by both the GLSC and the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC). The Congressman met with multiple GLSC staff, including Center Director Russ Strach (GLSC, Ann Arbor, Michigan) and Biologists Scott Miehls and Chris Holbrook (GLSC, Millersburg, Michigan), as well as multiple GLFC staff, including Communications Director and Legislative Liaison Marc Gaden and Computational Engineer Dan Zielinski. Anne Scott, a PhD student at Michigan State University, also presented during the Congressman’s visit. Discussions and presentations focused on sea lamprey control, pheromone research, and innovative trapping technologies, as well as the Boardman River selective fish passage initiative and acoustic telemetry studies of multiple Great Lakes fishes. The historical role of HBBS and current lab renovations were also discussed. USGS Chief of Communications-Central States Region Dave Ozman, GLSC Communications Contractor Andrea Miehls (GLSC, Millersburg, Michigan), GLSC Biologist Peter Esselman (GLSC, Ann Arbor, Michigan), and James Hogge of the Congressman’s staff also participated in the tour.
At CVB, the Congressman met with Strach and Esselman, Michigan DNR Lake Michigan Fisheries Research Manager Dave Clapp, and Cheboygan City Manager Tom Eustice. GLSC staff and partners discussed the important role that GLSC science plays within the management regime that sustains the $7 billion Great Lakes Fishery. They also discussed the future of Great Lakes fishery science through the use of advanced technologies. Local officials discussed the economic and social impact that CVB and HBBS have in the region. Captain Joe Bergan (GLSC, Cheboygan, Michigan) also led the Congressman on a tour of the research vessel Sturgeon. HBBS Technician Chris Wright (GLSC, Millersburg, Michigan), R/V Sturgeon crew members Lyle Grivicich and Brad Briggs (GLSC, Cheboygan, Michigan), Ozman, and GLSC Communications Contractor Lauren Holbrook (GLSC, Millersburg, Michigan), and Hogge also joined the tour.
