Research Activities

Dr. Noel Pavlovic, USGS, in collaboration with the National Park Service, is conducting a study of the effects of post fire environment on the invasion of the invasive vine Oriental bittersweet (PDF file). Several small scale burns were conducted on November 5 in beech-maple forest at Chellburng Farm and the Heron Rookery at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. After the burns, seed of Oriental bittersweet will be sown in these research plots to determine how post fire environment influences the germination, survival, and growth of this highly invasive vine. Dr. Stacey Leicht-Yoiung will also participate in this interagency research, funded by the Joint Fire Science Program.
