Fish Distribution in Lake Superior

Modal Depths Occupied by Fishes Seasonally in Lake Superior GraphSeasonal bathymetric distributions of fishes in Lake Superior, shown by modal depths on the graph, form a continuum from fishes that generally inhabit shallow water (<25 meters) in all seasons, to those that generally inhabit deep water (>75 m) in all seasons.

Fishes that mostly inhabit shallow water in all seasons are longnose sucker and round whitefish. Fishes that mostly inhabit deep water in all seasons are shortjaw cisco, slimy sculpin, spoonhead sculpin, and deepwater sculpin.

Only pygmy whitefish mostly occupy moderate depths in all seasons.

The other species move across depths seasonally, and most of the more pronounced seasonal changes were associated with spawning movements.
